No doubt the corporate media pom-pom girls will try to spin this as someone else's fault, but in truth the blame for the decline of America rests squarely on the Federal Reserve and the US Government, which shamelessly exploited Bretton Woods and the "credit from thin air" game to exploit and impoverish not only the rest of the world but the American people as well.

Simply by printing up more Federal Reserve Notes for international commerce the United States collected a very covert "Imperial" tax on the rest of the world, abandoning the traditional role of making products to make money and instead making money the product of our nation. The United States quit making TV sets and other products, shifted the messy manufacturing thing is to other countries and settled in to send large piles of cash in round circles in the hopes that they would grow, and thanks to the miracle of the Federal reserve, which turns debt into instant money, the scam worked for a while.

But the Federal reserve, granted legal right to counterfeit and inflate the money supply by the Federal Government, presumably for a piece of the action, is a pyramid, and all pyramids are doomed to fall. Those at the top escape with their loot, while the rest of us living down by the base are buried in the rubble.

Public Policy Polling’s habit of asking revealing, bizarre questions continues with a survey of New Jersey voters that finds—as President Obama’s approval rating dips slightly—only 79 percent of voters ready to rule out the possibility that their president is the Anti-Christ. Eight percent say he is, while 13 percent are not sure.

Further breakdowns on that question:

- Twelve percent of McCain voters think Obama is the Anti-Christ. Twenty-one percent are not sure.

- Fourteen percent of Republicans think Obama is the Anti-Christ. Fifteen percent are not sure.

- Eighteen percent of “conservative” voters think Obama is the Anti-Christ. Seventeen percent are not sure.

The big surprise here–the group of voters most likely to think Obama is the Anti-Christ are … Hispanics, who solidly backed Obama in 2008. Only 58 percent of them say, for sure, that their president is not Satan come to wreak havoc here on earth.

Another day, another story of a banking executive making a boneheaded move. And this one seems too unbelievable to be true.

A Wells Fargo honcho in charge of foreclosures decided to make herself right at home in a $12 million Malibu beach house, moving in and throwing big parties soon after it had been surrendered to her bank, the Los Angeles Times reports after talking to neighbors.

What could make this story even more outrageous? How about a dash of Bernard Madoff? The former owners of the home were victims of Madoff's Ponzi scheme. They lost a fortune in the fraud, their real estate agent told the Times.

Bing: Bank executives gone bad

The owners turned the house over to Wells Fargo last May, but the bank refused to show the house to potential buyers, the agent said. And then, neighbors say, the foreclosure boss moved in.

Neighbors in the gated community got a little suspicious, and began investigating this woman they say suddenly began living in the house. They got her name from community employees, who admitted to the Times that they issued her a homeowner's parking pass. They believe she is Cheronda Guyton, a Wells Fargo senior vice president responsible for foreclosed commercial properties.

The Times ran the license plate number of the Volvo parked at the 3,800-square-foot home and found it was registered to Guyton. Neighbors said that guests often visited the home where Guyton, her husband and two children lived. They said Guyton threw a huge party in August, bringing a yacht offshore and transporting guests back and forth from the beach.

Wells Fargo is remaining tight-lipped about the whole situation, saying it won't discuss specific employee issues for privacy reasons. But it promises to investigate the allegations. You can see pictures of the home here.

Can hundreds of stock-selling insiders be wrong?

The stock market has mounted an historic rally since it hit a low in March. The S&P 500 is up 55%, as U.S. job losses have slowed and credit markets have stabilized.

But against that improving backdrop, one indicator has turned distinctly bearish: Corporate officers and directors have been selling shares at a pace last seen just before the onset of the subprime malaise two years ago.

While a wave of insider selling doesn't necessarily foretell a stock market downturn, it suggests that those with the first read on business trends don't believe current stock prices are justified by economic fundamentals.

"It's not a very complicated story," said Charles Biderman, who runs market research firm Trim Tabs. "Insiders know better than you and me. If prices are too high, they sell."

Biderman, who says there were $31 worth of insider stock sales in August for every $1 of insider buys, isn't the only one who has taken note. Ben Silverman, director of research at the InsiderScore.com web site that tracks trading action, said insiders are selling at their most aggressive clip since the summer of 2007.

Silverman said the "orgy of selling" is noteworthy because corporate insiders were aggressive buyers of the market's spring dip. The S&P 500 dropped as low as 666 in early March before the recent rally took it back above 1,000.

"That was a great call," Silverman said. "They were buying when prices were low, so it makes sense to look at what they're doing now that prices are higher."

Israel is pulling out all the stops in order to get the US to neutralize its existential threat, Iran, due to its nuclear energy program.

Israel expects our kids to do the fighting, getting maimed, and dying to achieve this geopolitical outcome.

Even though the US has said that they are willing to talk to Iran regarding the latest document Iran has sent regarding its nuclear program, this is simply cosmetic. Iran has said that its nuclear enrichment is off the table for discussion, and that issue is at the core of the Iran's disagreement with the West.

The US and Israel know, without a doubt, that neither Russia nor China will go along with more sanctions at the UN security council.

So, the US and Israel are left with imposing either unilateral, or bilateral sanctions on Iran.

But how are those sanctions going to function if the rest of the world ignores them?

Short answer: they won't.

War with Russia. Sound like a good idea?

Michael Kinsley and David Boaz are right. The best solution (and clearly, the libertarian one) to the gay marriage debate is to privatize the institution altogether.

Though this controversy is very emotional and hot-button, it really doesn't need to be that way. In the free society, gays would be allowed to get married, and I suspect that most people would come to accept their relationships as respectable and legitimate. But if cultural conservatives disagreed, no one would have the right to impose gay marriage on their churches and businesses.


This being said, I am not optimistic that many will take the privatize marriage position seriously. Sadly, we live in a society that believes centralized bureaucracies should shape our values rather than families, friends and religious groups. Thus, the great amount of resources and creative energy wasted on this "debate," will probably just continue to amass. Since "leave each other alone," is not considered a viable option, otherwise "chill" people think they must coerce others with their preferred values, lest they be coerced!

And as usual, we have the state to thank for this unnecessary division.

These days, Donald Buswell’s job is not as exciting or dangerous as it once was. For the past few months, his working hours have been spent taking care of some 40-plus wounded soldiers at San Antonio’s Fort Sam Houston medical center. The work is sometimes menial, even janitorial, but he doesn’t mind. After all, Buswell has been where these men are — three years ago, he too was recovering from wounds received in a battle zone in Iraq.

“I truly consider this an honor,” Buswell told his dad not long ago.

Still, it’s not exactly where Buswell expected to be after 20 years of well-respected service in the Army.

Since joining the Army in 1987, he had risen to the rank of sergeant first class, serving in both Gulf Wars, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Korea. He ended up with shrapnel scars and a Purple Heart and, back in the U.S. after his last tour in Iraq, a job as intelligence analyst at Fort Sam Houston.

He couldn’t have foreseen that one e-mail could derail his career and put him on his way out of the Army. One e-mail, speculating about events that millions of people have questioned for the last six years, was all it took.

Sgt. Buswell wants to know: What really happened on 9/11? And he said so in his e-mail. In the few paragraphs of that August 2006 message — a reply not to someone outside the service, but to other soldiers — Buswell wrote that he thought the official report of what happened that day at the Pentagon, and in the Pennsylvania crash of United Airlines Flight 93, was full of errors and unanswered questions.

“Who really benefited from what happened that day?” he asked rhetorically. Not “Arabs,” but “the Military Industrial Complex,” Buswell concluded. “We must demand a new, independent investigation.”

For voicing those opinions in an e-mail to 38 people on the San Antonio Army base, Buswell was stripped of his security clearance, fired from his job, demoted, and ordered to undergo a mental health exam.

(He was also ordered not to speak with the press. Information for this story came from documents, conversations with Buswell’s family members and friends, and sources within Fifth Army who asked not to be named.)

As if all that weren’t enough, Fort Sam Houston’s chief of staff penned a letter accusing Buswell of “making statements disloyal to the United States.”

His father, Winthrop Buswell, said that his son “is one of the most patriotic people I know.”

“Donald saw something that his conscience led him to dispute,” he said. “That’s just the type of man he is.”

For his dissent, Donald has paid a heavy price.

But the heroin is flowing into our inner cities and that's what's important!

The federal No Child Left behind Act of 2001 contains a little-known provision that threatens the federal funding of any school refusing to turn over the personal contact information of students in grades 7 through 12 to military recruiters. This action is in violation of the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Given the current economic recession, more high school age youth are considering joining the military. At this impressionable age, we must entrust our public schools with the responsibility to protect our children's rights to privacy. Students and parents have complained of multiple cell and home phone calls from military recruiters as well as uninvited recruiters arriving at their houses.

The Hawaii Department of Education offers a form that parents or legal guardians can sign to prevent this release of student information. It can be downloaded at doe.k12.hi.us. The American Friends Service Committee also offers this form in 11 languages at www.afschawaii.org. Forms are due by Sept. 15, but will be accepted anytime during the school year. In mid-October, the Department of Education is required to turn over a student list to recruiters.

The federal No Child Left Behind Act also grants military recruiters access to campuses, with their presence far outnumbering college recruiters and prospective employers. Recruiting is currently a $4 billion industry. According to Army spokesman Douglas Smith, the military spent an average of $16,199 for each of its 73,373 recruits in 2005.

Youth advocacy programs such as Careers in Peacemaking (CIP) have been forming across the nation to provide youth with informed choices about military enlistment. We believe that before making this life-altering decision, a young person should be exposed to data from as many different sources as possible. Consulting with school administrators and teachers, we offer presentations in high school classrooms and attend career fairs to make known the realities of current military life and war, and to introduce nonmilitary sources of funding for jobs and college.

Maui CIP is fortunate to have a veteran, a Maui high school graduate who has served in Iraq, share with students his experiences regarding military service and war. Through my CIP activities, I have learned that most of our island youth have no idea what military service entails, despite the fact that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been going on for eight years of their lives. Many haven't given much thought to the U.S. role in these conflicts. They cannot define "civilian casualty," or "collateral damage."

Almost all students that we have spoken to are unaware that enlistment is a mandatory commitment of eight years, or that their rank, assignment and length of service can change without prior notice or consent. They don't understand the implications of giving up their civilian rights when they sign the complex enlistment agreement or how this can impact them if they are troubled by what the military orders them to do. They are unaware of the rates of veteran suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder. Female students know nothing of the high statistics of sexual assault on women in the military.

One of the most common reason youth enlist is money for college. Others sign up to give their life a higher meaning, to help others or to serve their country. Many see it as their best opportunity to travel. These are all valid reasons. CIP's concern is that in the course of fulfilling these desires, the student can lose their life, become severely wounded, or suffer mental disorders including long-term depression and disillusionment over what they experience in the military or combat. CIP believes it is important that students are provided with facts, testimonies and alternatives.

One alternative is Americorps, which recently received a large boost in federal funding. It is our hope that citizens will understand that our goals are not subversive but merely to engage in meaningful dialogue with our island's children to help them make informed decisions.

Wise, perhaps, since I can't imagine there's a good way to spin this. Meanwhile, the State Department, which has harbored internal concerns about ArmorGroup's performance for years but still renewed its embassy contract this summer, says it is taking POGO's allegations very seriously. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters yesterday that the matter has been referred to the agency's inspector general. In the coming weeks, the agency is going to have some serious explaining to do. Not only concerning its contractor oversight, but about why a top State Department official told Congress in June that ArmorGroup's "performance on the ground...has been and is sound."

Where's Rahm Emmanuel?

Trying with all his might to make Attorney General Holder's torture investigation all about "destroying morale at the CIA" and disarming America of "techniques" that worked (read: threatening to rape prisoners' mothers), How-Far-Have-the-Mighty-Fallen Dick Cheney had to put on his tie again yesterday to work the talk shows, rather than relaxing like a proper ex-VP at fishing and accidentally shooting his friends in the face.

Cheney:

"My sort of overwhelming view is that the enhanced interrogation techniques were absolutely essential in saving thousands of American lives and preventing further attacks," he said. "It was good policy. It was properly carried out. It worked very, very well."

The real question is why Rahm Emmanuel, who supposedly revels in the political battle, is allowing Cheney to savage his boss without a come-back, as if just because he didn't want investigations, he's going to stand back and let Obama take a beating which will stick in the minds of the misguided torture-equals-safety crowd.

Unflipping believable, but considering the way this ghastly military misadventure has been conducted, not something that wouldn't have ultimately been expected.

U.S. officials confirmed that the preliminary investigation and the proposed hearings were sparked by a GlobalPost special report on the funding of the Taliban last month that uncovered a process that has been an open secret in Afghanistan for years among those in international aid organizations.

The report exposed that the Taliban takes a percentage of the billions of dollars in aid from U.S. and other international coalition members that goes to large organizations and their subcontractors for development projects, in exchange for protection in remote areas controlled by the insurgency.
