It does not take very long for those who have joined the US military to recognize that, in many of these immoral and illegal wars, the US is absolutely on the wrong side of history.
Most of these young people have most probably been brought up with something approximating a moral compass, and what they're being asked to do just doesn't compute.
And there can be no better proof of that last statement than the US/NATO invasion and occupation of Afghanistan; at this moment, a decade into this calamitous military misadventure, the only people "winning" are the drug lords, and the defense contractors providing hired mercenaries and provisions.
