Another Cop Feels 'Threatened' and Kills Family Dog

American Scofflaw

A Waldorf, Md., family's dog was euthanized after a deputy shot the dog outside their house Thursday night. The family says two children were watching, including a 2-year-old who was a foot away from the dog when it was shot.

[...]

The homeowner said deputies asked her to put her 2-year-old sheep dog, Dixie, inside the house while they sorted things out. The homeowner complied, but her 2-year-old niece pushed the door open a short time later. Dixie came running out, and the deputy shot the dog, according to an account from the homeowner's sister.

What, no Taser? I hear they're non-lethal.

Judging by the photos included with this story, Dixie looks like a real killer. All cuddly and whatnot.

The truth is, this dog would've been shot even if police officers showed up in full SWAT gear, where the chance of sustaining injury from a bite was virtually non-existent. They always shoot the dog, even if it's running away. All it really takes for a cop to open fire is for a pooch to merely advance toward an officer with a tail wagging. And in this case, it's probably a small miracle that the cop didn't kill the child by mistake.

But the police just issue the obligatory "Oops!" and ubiquitously claim they were "threatened," and we apparently just nod right along and continue enabling this outrageous behavior.
