This is the most bone-headed policy yet.
This is a government that can't even track down the script kiddies hacking into credit card companies. They sure as heck cannot locate or stop really skilled experts from sending whatever data they want anywhere in the US over the net. And the numbers stations are still operating, which is a major means of signaling foreign agents in this country.
This grabbing of personal electronic at the border will not stop real terrorists, but it will piss off tourists.
And, of course, this will allow everyone involved in the seizures to make copies of anything they find, whether it is our business secrets, or illegal copies of our legally-owned movies and music!
And absent a chain-of-custody, there are plenty of opportunities for unscrupulous minor officials seeking promotion to plant incriminating evidence on those digital devices in order to get noticed by their superiors.
